Ultimate Death Valley Tour

On October 13, 2017 SCOTA will embark on the ultimate tour of the Death Valley area. Our tour guide will be David Hale, who has a weatlth of knowledge and experience in the Death Valley area. The projected course is as follows:

1) Visit the Eureka Dunes
2) Enter Saline Valley via Steel Pass
3) Camp at the Saline Valley Hot Springs on Friday night
4) Exit saline valley via the legendary Lippencot Road
5) Setup camp at the Racetrack
6) Visit Lost Burro Mine
7) Take Hunter Mountain road and check out Hunter Cabin
8) Exit Death Valley via South Pass

This will be a 3 day trip and we will log MANY miles, so make sure you bring additional fuel and plenty of drinking water. I would recomend a minimum of 10 gallons of additional fuel. You will need a full size spare, patch kit and the proper tools to change a tire in the field.

Since we will be entering via Steel Pass, be advised that we recommend at least 33" tires and a mild lift in order to make it through without issue. A rear locker or A-Trac would also be helpful, but necessarily required.

As always, this is an event for DUES-PAYING club members only. If you are not a dues-paying member you are welcome to join us on a single trip to check out the club. To be eliglble for any future runs, you must be a full dues-paying member.

Funnel Lake / Eastern Sierras

On August 11, 2017 SCOTA will be visiting the Eastern Sierras by way of the Coyote Flats trail out of Bishop, California. This is a high elevation destination so bring your cold weather gear JUST in case. I have been in this area during the middle of summer with temps dipping into low 20s at night.

Depending on the snow level, we will attempt to camp at Funnel Lake, which is at 10,500ft elevation. If the Lake is unreachable, we will have other options such as Baker Creek and other areas along the flats.

This is a moderately easy trail consisting of some off-camber switchbacks and a small rock garden to navigate through at the end of the trail near Funnel Lake. I have led stock 4x4 vehicles through this trail in the past.

As always, this is an event for DUES-PAYING club members only. If you are not a dues-paying member you are welcome to join us on a single trip to check out the club. To be eliglble for any future runs, you must be a full dues-paying member.

Sequoia National Forest

Summer is around the corner, let's plan some mountain trips.

The location will be around Ponderosa but we can discuss whether we want to do dispersed camping or stay at a campground. During the day we can do some exploring of the fire roads, there's a ton to see up there.

Carizzo Plains

The wild flowers at the Carrizo plain is going off! This is a really easy going trip, all the roads where in really good condition and freasly graded.

I would like to leave friday night if possible. We would meet in Ventura at location TBD at 7pm and travel up the 33 and arrive in the monument at night. All the roads are not technical at all( I stopped counting how many prius I saw). Arriving at night would be fun and we should get a good camp spot. If leaving Friday doesnt work we can ether leave saturday morning early of you can meet up with us out there. Again the roads are really easy, 2wd rigs will be fine out here. Depending on the size of the group I will chose our intended camp spot and post up here with a location.

There are two main camp sights that fill up fast. Even though they have bathrooms I would like to stay away from them. There are plunty of remote camping spots that look really promising!

Once in the monument Saturday/Sunday we can drive around looking at the wild flowers, checking out the San Andreas Fault at Wallace Creek, Soda Lake, and adventure in the Caliente/Temblors range.

As of 3/18-3/19 there where many patches of yellow flowers. Still a lot that are buds so the next couple of weeks its going to take off!

Paniment Valley/ Briggs Cabin

On April 1, 2017, Death Valley Dave (David Hale) will be leading SCOTA on an adventure into the Panamints section of death valley. We will start in Ridgecrest, make our way over to Trona over to Ballerat and through South Park loop to Briggs Cabin. Our final destination will be Briggs Cabin, which is the nicest community maintained cabin in all of Death Valley. Being able to camp in Briggs Cabin is on a first-come, first-served basis, so if it is occupied we may have to primitive camp.

Red Rock Canyon State Park/ Last Chance Canyon

On 2/18/17 SCOTA will visit the Red Rock Canyon State Park in the Mojave Desert for President's Day Weekend. There is a lot of history in this park and sights to see including Bickel Camp, Burro Schmidt Tunnel, Last Chance Canyon Trail and abandoned mines/cabins.

If we are lucky, we can land a campsite at one of the abandoned cabins which will have a pit toilet.

Caravan information to follow. I will put together a GPX file and email it to people who participate in this run.
